Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
